But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter;

and we all are the work of thy hand.

The Ministry of Music

The most important role of the choir is to provide a spiritual setting for the worshippers.  The opening song should set in motion transference of the mind-set of those in the sanctuary.  It should lift our hearts and minds out of self and point the way to God the Father.  So many worshippers come to service heavy laden with numerous problems and concerns.  They need a sanctuary to let go of these internal thoughts and prepare their hearts to accept the word of God.  Worship service music should always lift hearts and minds toward God in a closer relationship with Him.

Remember that worship is the celebration of the mighty acts of God.  Therefore, the music should point to and bring into remembrance what God has done through His Son, Jesus the Christ, and His continuing presence through the work and power of the Holy Spirit.

Choirs that make-up our ministry of music are:

First Sunday - Senior Choir

Second Sunday  - Reverend A.A. McCrae Gospel Choir

Third Sunday - Mass Choir

Fourth Sunday - Youth Choir

Fifth Sunday - Reverend T.L. Henry Male Chorus

Concert Choir - Serves as requested by the Pastor

Cheerful Chimes Hand Bell Choir - Youth ages 5-11

Our Music Ministry is coordinated by Pastor Henry and Brother Jerry Oates, our Minister of Music.

Brother Oates is a native of Faison, North Carolina and has been involved in the ministry of music from a very young age.  He has worked with various choirs and churches in Wayne, Duplin, and New Hanover Counties since the age of twelve.  His love of music began at his family's church, Holy Temple United Holy Church in Calypso, North Carolina.  From there, he served with churches in Faison, Goldsboro and Mount Olive, North Carolina.

Brother Oates moved to Wilmington in 1991 to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington under a full academic scholarship.  While there, he served as a musician for the UNC-W Gospel Choir and as a member of the UNC-W Concert choir.  In addition, he served as Minister of Music for Warner Temple AME Zion church from 1992 until 2004 under the pastorate of Reverend Terry L. Jones, Sr.

Currently, Brother Oates is principal of Lakeside School in Wilmington, North Carolina and is pursuing a Doctorate degree from Fayetteville State University. He has two sons, Miles and Jared.

Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.  For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.  PSALM 33: 1-4 (KJV)
